You know those Christmas trees that have are wrapped in beautiful ribbon, and are adorned with ornaments of the same theme, and the decorations are evenly spaced on
Me Neither. Because we have children.
Instead our trees are naked from the waist down for fear of a grabby toddler, half the lights don’t work, and they are covered with ornaments made from construction paper and pinecones with glue all over them and Disney princesses.
But you know what? I love it. I love how each year, the kids get so excited to pull out the ornaments and give a 5 minute story about how each one was made. I love that each one excites a memory from them. And I love that I get teary eyed for each handprint that seems bigger and bigger each year (crap, now I’m crying).
It has become an unintentional tradition of ours that each year we make some type of ornament for the Christmas tree. This year we tried a variation on the traditional salt dough recipe. Not only did they come out beautiful, but the kids loved it, they smell delicious, and it kept them busy for hours.
Such a simple recipe. No baking required.
This recipe yields about 10 ornaments. I ended up making 4 batches. I have 4 kids. And of course each kid wanted to make a bajillion ornaments. So if you are my friend or family, expect one of these as a gift and pretend you love it 😉
Cinnamon Ornament Recipe
- 1 cup of flour
- 1/2 cup of salt
- 1/2 cup cinnamon
- 3/4 cup hot water
Mix all dry ingredients and then add water. (I used my electric mixer and dough hook, but you can traditionally mix and knead for 10 minutes as well) Mix all ingredients thoroughly then knead on a floured surface (or mix with dough hook for 10 minutes) until it is no longer sticky and forms a ball. On a floured surface, roll dough to 1/4 inch thick. Cut into desired shapes. We used play dough tools to make cute imprints on some of them. Peirce a hole through each (I used a straw) and place on wax paper to dry for at least 24 hours before painting. We used acrylic paints to decorate. I let them write their name and date on the back so that next year they don’t argue about who made the neon purple pig with the weird eyeballs.
